Cellular Serivces - Fox Valley

just curious if there's a similar website to Fox Cities HD, but for cell phones. I'm currently a US Cellular customer, but their phones suck and my contract is up so I'm debating between Alltel(who will be merging with Verizon in December) and AT&T.

Is AT&T's cellular service in Wisconsin as bad as people make it? I really want an iPhone, but not if I'm going to hate not getting reception. So whats better in the Fox Valley? Alltel or AT&T?

Thanks in advance

Tom

Don't know about a website

Don't know about a website for that, but here's my personal experience.

Been with Sprint for something like seven years. Recently decided I didn't want to pay a big monthly bill and have a contract when I barely use 100 minutes in a month. Decided to shop for a prepaid provider. Went with Alltel for a couple weeks, but their service seemed so incredibly spotty and weird. Even though their coverage map shows practically everywhere in the state, not all that area is directly serviced by Alltel. They use other carriers to suppliment their own towers, I guess. They have towers here in Appleton but apparently not many in Green Bay. Every time I dialed a number in Green Bay or along Highway 41, it always made me dial the number a second time, even for numbers in my contacts list. Very bizarre and inconvenient. Ended up going with Virgin Mobile which uses the Sprint network so it's essentially similar to what I had, but no contracts.

Can't personally attest to AT&T's network, but I've typically heard bad things about coverage area and service. Back when they were AT&T Wireless (before they became Cingular then back to AT&T) I tried switching to them and there was a horrible debacle where they essentially doubled my order (sent two phones and activated two lines). Took months to get canceled and reimbursed. I'm sure it's different now, but I've talked to a number of iPhone users who say they love the phone but hate the service with a passion.

What's been your specific

What's been your specific issues with US Cellular? I know there data services are expensive and not very good, but we've never had any serious issues with the phone portion of the service.

I've been with them for about 6 years now- dropped the landline about 5 years ago and I have a shared plan with the wife. Nationwide plan with more minutes than we use for $90/mth (wife averages about 800 minutes a month, around 200 for me). Current phones are Motorola Razors- only problems with them is the battery life sucks. Never had any serious problems with coverage- have lost coverage in a few areas out in the middle of nowhere where I wouldn't expect service, but generally no problems.

While I'd love an iPhone or a similar phone with all the bells and whistles, I can't imagine using it enough to justify the cost and I have other gadgets that perform many of the same functions but don't require a monthly service fee (in other words, for our situation we want/need phones that function well as phones and while the other things would be nice, they're not necessities).

well, US Cellulars phone

well, US Cellulars phone selection sucks. I have never had an issue with their service, and I would imagine they have the best service in Northeast Wisconsin. However, I need something I can use as a PDA too, and check my email. I have a Razr and it's the biggest piece of junk.

Alltel/Verizon's new HTC Touch Diamond looks amazing, but AT&Ts iPhone is the cat's ass. Alltel's "My Circle" lets you talk/text anyone in that circle for free, and you can change your circle online every 24 hours!!! I'm just leary of Alltel because they are merging with Verizon soon.

It's not geared towards our

It's not geared towards our geograhic area, but a good site for all things cell phone and cell phone service related is:
http://www.howardforums.com/

With over 500,000 members, it's likely there are some others from the Fox Cities that post there.

I have been an Alltel

I have been an Alltel customer for about 8 years and I was a US Cellular customer prior to that.

I can only testify to Sprint and AT&T by many complaints I have heard from friends and colleagues. The comment of IPhone being grate but the service being poor has been told to me more than I can remember.

Alltel has always been great and I haven't experienced some of the issues stated here. I too worry about the service post merger but as Alltel the customer service and overall service has been great.

I have the HTC touch and it works great as a phone and PDA. I would encourage anyone buying it to purchase a full screen keyboard application for texting and email however.

I'm looking at the new HTC

I'm looking at the new HTC Touch Diamond or the Touch Pro(probably the Diamond since its cheaper). Glad to hear you like yours. How much are applications like the Full Screen Keyboard? Hell, you pay $200 for a phone and it doesnt come with full screen keyboard? WTF?

I think im choosing Alltel. I read on http://www.howardforums.com/ and it really sounds like AT&T sucks in Northeast wisconsin.

I have had Verizon for about

I have had Verizon for about 5 years now and am very happy with it. I have only found about two spots in Wisconsin so far that I have lost service/dropped a call and they were out in the middle of no where. I have the nation wide call plan with a LG VX8700 which is like a MOTO RAZR. My sister had AT&T a few years back before it became Cingular and she never liked it and now has Verizon also. I also would like to get a iPhone but I really don't want AT&T cellular service as I have heard AT&T doesn't have very good service coverage in Wisconsin.
