DirecTV looking to siphon off Time Warner exiles
Just because LIN Television and DISH Network have a sweetheart deal doesn't mean they're the only satellite company looking to welcome in former Time Warner customers
This week, rival satellite operator DirecTV started running advertisements in the market specifically targeting Time Warner over the LIN TV / WLUK contract quibble.
While it doesn't appear they are offering any above-and-beyond incentive like DISH is, they are no doubt trying to lure customers away from Time Warner during the prolonged WLUK blackout.

DirecTV has a really nice
DirecTV has a really nice deal going right now for new customers. Free HD DVR, free install in 4 rooms, HD DVR package (including WLUK FOX 11) for $50/month for the first year. Plus if you know someone that has DirecTV and can refer you, I believe you can save another $5/month for 10 months.
I prefer DirecTV over Dish myself. All my friends who have had Dish came to DirecTV because Dish is the first to go out in rain fade. My DirecTV rarely ever goes out.
What is the monthly charge
What is the monthly charge AFTER one year? Any monthly lease fees? monthly receiver fees? HD monthly fee?
There are so many different
There are so many different packages. I assume you would want HD and DVR so the cost would be $50/mo. with 1 TV. Your HD DVR is free with a 2 year commitment. New subscribers save $23/mo. right now for 12 months and get HBO, Showtime, and Starz free for 3 months as well. The monthly receiver fee is a lease fee and is $4.99/mo for each receiver after the first just like most other providers.
We checked into them quite a
We checked into them quite a while ago. You know that feeling you get that something isn't quite right? I'm just not comfortable with a company that isn't confident enough in their service that they don't need a contract to keep customers.
To be fair, I believe Time
To be fair, I believe Time Warner is also doing the same thing if you opt to "lock in" your price.
It's giving you the option that makes me, personally, more comfortable with them. I don't want to opt into a 2-year contract when I don't know where I'm going to be living past my apartment lease.
so their offering the same
so their offering the same deals they usually do
I don't think until recently
I don't think until recently they ever offered a free HD DVR. They always offer free install for 4 rooms though. The price point and savings does change though.
who wants to sign a 2 yaer
who wants to sign a 2 yaer deal just because of 1 channel. I would rather wait for it to be back on twc than get stuck with dish for 2 years
I don't blame you. I
I don't blame you. I wouldn't want to be stuck with Dish either for 2 years. That is why I have have DirecTV.
In my opinion, no one comes close to the service and value DirecTV provides except maybe AT&T. Each their own though.
Does DirecTV give you an
Does DirecTV give you an option to opt out of signing a 2-year contract at startup? Last time I tried shopping for satellite service, DISH let you opt out of a commitment by paying the $99 activation fee up front. I could find no such option on DirecTV's site.
I'm more willing to sign up with a company with a marginal service record, so long as I have the option to can them should I experience bad service myself.
That's a excellent question
That's a excellent question Mark but, unfortunately I don't know. I guess I have never thought twice about it personally. I have been with them for 8 years now. When I got the new HD DVR I was willing to re-up my contract without hesitation. To be honest with you, it's not often I ever have to call DirecTV for anything but, when I do, they are always friendly and willing to help.
Perhaps someone else might be able to help you with the answer to your question.
