Surprise! Dish Network lights up four Green Bay HD locals early [UPDATE 2]
No, this doesn't appear to be a belated April Fool's joke.
According to a press release, Dish Network today turned on Green Bay local channels in lush, gorgeous high-definition. This is significant because a) Dish Network was the last local provider to have added HD locals, b) Dish Network themselves said last month we weren't going to see them until May and c) Lin Television signed a deal with Dish for their stations' HD feeds back in March, which includes WLUK HD. This marks the first time folks in our market have been able to get WLUK HD without an antenna.
Dish Network customers will, obviously, need an HD receiver like the ViP722 to receive HD local channels.
Oh yeah, and by the way, they also managed to add one more national HD channel -- CNN HD -- to the lineup today, according to Engadget HD.
[UPDATE 1 4/16 2:13 PM -- WLUK has confirmed, on their website, that WLUK HD is now available on Dish Network.]
[UPDATE 2 4/16 2:13 PM -- Dish Network now lists the channels available in HD in the "Green Bay-Appleton, WI Local Network Package." They include WBAY (on channel 5160), WFRV (channel 5161), WGBA (channel 5162), and WLUK (5163). WPNE, WIWB and WACY are not (yet) available.]

CNN showed up right away.
CNN showed up right away. As for local HD.... You'll need a wing dish and I set up an install, which is at no charge.
i set up an install today so
i set up an install today so next week i will have them, also just noticed scifi hd and usa hd are now available with dish nentwork(took long enough).
How did you get your wing
How did you get your wing dish set up at no charge?? I called Dish and they told me it was $60 to set-up even though I already pay $5 a month for my locals?? I would love to get the HD's through the dish so I could get rid of my antenna but I don't think I should have to pay extra.
Help!!
I also was told by Dish that
I also was told by Dish that I had to pay $59 for the wing dish and sign a new 24 month commitment. With how quickly things change in the HD world I don't want to be locked in for that long.
They told me the same thing.
They told me the same thing. I have no problems with dish and don't anticipate leaving anytime soon.......I just hate signing contracts. It might almost be worth the $60 to avoid it.
The first time i called i
The first time i called i was told $99 but when i called again later the next rep gave me the wing for free when i asked for a free upgrade.
The first 2 times i called i
The first 2 times i called i was told it was $60 or free with a 2 year contract to hook up the wing dish. The third time I called they told me it was completely free with no contract. I just set up the appointment!! :-)
Persistance pays off.....thanks everybody!!
Sure is nice having the
Sure is nice having the locals in HD. The ole DVR is loaded up with all of our shows in HD. Before I could only record one local HD and the other program would have to be in SD. No more cutting in and out when somebody walks across the living room, or if its windy outside. The installer said that this dish has such a strong signal that it should not even lose the signal during a T-Storm. He showed me how all of my other sats have a 40-50% strength, and the wing dish gets 75-80%.
Anybody hear when the rest
Anybody hear when the rest of the locals (WPNE, WIWB and WACY) will be available in HD through the dish?? Hopefully sooner than later.......
I wouldn't bet on WIWB and
I wouldn't bet on WIWB and WACY anytime soon. If you're not seeing them on any other service, I'd doubt Dish would be clamoring to get them on. I don't think many of the other local markets on Dish have CW and MyNetworkTV affiliates, especially when they don't have local news outfits.
As far as WPNE, I know there has been lobbying to get PBS channels on but I don't remember how far that got. I wouldn't hold my breath for them on either Dish or DirecTV in the near future either, especially with five channels to carry.
